Memoris Of A Geisha

After reading some harsh reviews for this movie, I went to the cinema with little expectation. It's been years since I read the novel (even though I read it twice) so I was not particularly concern with seeing the nuance and detail of the book on the big screen. It was a gorgeous film that brought to life the sight and sound of Gion circa 1940s. Both the costume and the makeup were a treat for the eyes as well. Although the movie ran for a very long time, there was surprisingly little story to tell. It has been distilled into a simple story of a young girl's struggle through life to fulfill a wish made in girlhood.

There was a line in the final scene that I particularly like though. Sayuri said to The Chairman that every step (she) took was to bring her closer to him. This really striked a chord with me as I'm prone to have crushes measured not in days, weeks, nor months...but in years.
